Théâtre français de Toronto presents Le malentendu (The Misunderstanding) by Albert Camus
Toronto, September 2025 – Théâtre français de Toronto (TfT) is proud to present Le malentendu (The Misunderstanding), one of Albert Camus’s great tragedies. Camus, a towering literary figure and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, offers here an unrelenting drama revisited by Karine Ricard. The production will run from November 5 to 15, 2025, at The Theatre Centre, in French with English surtitles.
SYNOPSIS : In a remote inn, a mother and daughter survive thanks to a trade as strange as it is terrible: travelers who stop there never leave again. One day, a man returns after many years of absence, hoping to reconnect with his family. But in this house where hope has given way to a cruel cycle, hidden identities and unspoken truths lead inexorably to tragedy.
Through this intimate family drama, Camus highlights issues that remain urgently relevant: the difficulty of communicating despite physical closeness, the vital need to be recognized by one’s own, and the weight of silence that separates and destroys. Between solitude, the quest for belonging, and despair in the face of precarity, Le malentendu resonates with today’s questions: how do we understand each other, how do we recognize one another, how do we live together without losing ourselves?
From director Karine Ricard:
“Staging Le malentendu means confronting Camus’s piercing lucidity about the fragility of human bonds. I wanted to give voice to that deafening silence that sometimes prevents us from saying what is essential, that emptiness which grows between those who love each other but no longer recognize one another. My hope is that the audience will feel both the beauty and cruelty of this text: a mirror of our own difficulties in communicating, but also an invitation to seek, despite everything, paths toward connection.”
