Spotlight on the next generation of artists: Éléa Losa
This article was produced in partnership with the University of Ottawa's Department of Theatre and Faculty of Arts.
At just 18 years old, Éléa Losa is already making her mark in the theatre world. Born in New York and raised between Paris and Toronto, she is now a first-year student in the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting at the University of Ottawa. Meet a young actress driven by creativity and a thirst for exploration.
Improv as a Turning Point
Éléa first set foot on stage through improvisation. "I loved the team spirit, the thrill of never knowing what would happen next, and the freedom to make my own choices," she recalls. But it was in 11th grade that she made a decisive choice: "I made a bet with myself. If I got the role I was auditioning for, I would go on to study theatre at university." She landed the role—and never looked back.
Early Successes and Discoveries
A defining moment in her journey was participating in the Théâtre Action festival, where she wrote and directed her own play: Les enquêtes extra super secrètes de Monsieur Dupoint. "I was so proud of our little team. We even won an award, which I never expected!" She also remembers an inspiring workshop with actor Vincent Leblanc-Beaudoin, whose play Le Concierge she had seen performed at her school: "He made me realize that theatre could be anything and everything, that we could truly play with conventions."
The Power of Theatre
What excites her most about acting? "Conveying a message, a point of view. Theatre has this incredible power to open minds and challenge preconceived ideas." This belief is reinforced by her intensive training at the University of Ottawa. The program, condensed into three years instead of four, kicks off with two immersive weeks of theatre exercises and performances. "I was nervous at first, but it turned out to be an amazing experience—like an artistic summer camp!"
A Future Yet to Be Written
For now, Éléa is exploring different styles, with a particular interest in documentary theatre. She follows her curiosity and experiences, setting no limits for herself. And when she imagines her future? "A country with sunshine and theatre—that would be perfect! Maybe the Middle East, Spain, or somewhere else… We’ll see!"
As for acting in English, she isn't particularly drawn to it because she feels more connected to the French language: "French theatre feels more engaged, more daring, and the melody of the language moves me more."
Before wrapping up, Éléa wants to send a special message to her high school teachers, Noémie Parenteau and Billy Boulet: "I miss them so much!" A heartfelt tribute that speaks volumes about the importance of mentors in an artist’s journey."
With her enthusiasm and talent, there’s no doubt that Éléa has a bright future ahead. We can’t wait to see her shine on stage!
Outside of theatre, Éléa is also passionate about drawing. You can check out her artistic talents on her TikTok account: @can_only_cook_eggs!
