And what if, before seeing Nzinga on stage, you met the woman behind the legend? Through a fascinating conference, professor and researcher Marieme Soda Lo explores the legacy of Njinga Mbande — queen, warrior, and diplomat, a powerful symbol of African female leadership.
A moment for discussion to reflect on the role of women in history, the struggles of yesterday and those of today.

Conference summary:
Like other historical figures and African heroines such as Kandake Amanirenas (Kingdom of Kush), Queen Amina of Zaria, or Queen Pokou, how should we view the leadership of Njinga Mbande today?

At once a queen, warrior, diplomat, and leading figure of anti-colonial resistance, her life story defies eras. What legacy and lessons can be drawn from her life, beyond reductive clichés and stereotyped portrayals?

This session is an invitation to dialogue and collective reflection on the symbolism and significance of the stories of these exceptional women. By exploring this historical female leadership, we will examine the present condition of women as well as quests for sovereignty in a constantly changing world.

Reflection question:
If Njinga Mbande were among us today, what do you think her greatest struggle would be?
