Playing Soon: Le problème avec le rose
Théâtre français de Toronto presents Le problème avec le rose, a co-production of Le Petit Théâtre de Sherbrooke and La[ Parenthèse] - Christophe Garcia (Québec-France). This show for young audiences aged 6 and up will be performed at the Berkeley Street Theatre from January 15 to 17 during school matinees, with a single performance for all audiences on January 18 at 2 p.m.
SYNOPSIS: Every day, Alix, Sasha, Lou, and Noa gather in a pink playroom to share vibrant stories. Occasionally, external events disrupt their routine: a plane flies overhead, it starts to rain... nothing too unsettling. But one day, they receive shocking news: pink is for girls. It's earth-shattering! Alix adopts a virile, fearless, unshakable persona. Sasha tries to blend in and avoid standing out. Noa finds themself at odds with newly imposed social norms. And Lou, disarmed by the narrowness of the path ahead, follows his instincts. How can they go on living as if nothing has changed? Doubts creep in: Are they really boys? How can they be sure? Swept into a whirlwind of emotions, they embark on a journey to redefine themselves, for better or worse.
Le Problème avec le Rose is a humour- and absurdity-filled show blending dance and theatre. It explores gender and diversity with sensitivity and insight, making it a thought-provoking experience for the entire family.
In this play, created for audiences aged 6 and up, Érika Tremblay-Roy and Christophe Garcia tackle profound issues through an accessible lens. Drawing unicorns, fighting, and jumping recklessly into puddles—what activities are “for boys”? Which are “for girls”? Who decides?
Between tragedy and comedy, the play creates a whimsical, sometimes absurd, and occasionally unsettling world. The words intertwine with expressive dance, set design, lighting, costumes, and on-stage trickery, all inviting reflection on the importance of embracing differences, tolerating others, and resisting societal pressures to conform.
At its heart, the play addresses the vital social issue of gender identity. It offers children a chance to reflect on and challenge the stereotypes associated with boys and girls. It inspires them to step into life with boldness, brilliance, and freedom, carrying with them their unique experiences. A play not to be missed.
